Smoolthan: A Modern Sans Serif Typeface for Brand Identity

I still remember the exact moment I opened a blank Figma file for that local skincare brand. The client wanted something clean, approachable, and distinctly modern—no frills, no heavy serifs, just pure clarity. We had spent weeks debating color palettes and logo marks, but nothing felt "right" until we started playing with typography. That’s when Smoolthan, a sans serif font created by Situjuh Nazara, landed in my queue of new typefaces to test.

It wasn’t an instant love at first sight, but it was definitely a case of "this fits perfectly." Smoolthan isn’t trying to be loud or aggressive. Instead, it offers a quiet confidence that works beautifully in branding projects where readability and elegance need to coexist. If you are a graphic designer looking for a versatile typeface that can handle everything from logo design to editorial design, here is how I used Smoolthan in a real-world scenario and why it might become your next go-to creative font.

The First Mockup: Testing Visual Hierarchy

When I first dragged Smoolthan onto the canvas, I immediately noticed its balanced proportions. As a sans serif font, it has that geometric cleanliness, but with enough humanist warmth to feel friendly rather than corporate. For our skincare brand, we needed a headline font that could stand alone without needing extra decorative elements.

I started by setting up a simple brand board. Using the regular weight for body text and the bold weight for headlines, I quickly saw how well Smoolthan established visual hierarchy. The letterforms are open and airy, which makes long paragraphs surprisingly easy to read—a crucial factor for product descriptions on packaging. Unlike some display fonts that sacrifice legibility for style, Smoolthan maintains its structure even at smaller sizes. This made it an excellent candidate not just for large-format posters, but also for small-scale applications like ingredient labels and business cards.

One thing I appreciated was how the font handled spacing. Kerning pairs generally sat well together right out of the box, saving me hours of manual adjustment. In branding, consistency is key, and having a typeface that behaves predictably allows designers to focus more on layout and less on fixing awkward gaps between letters.

Logo Design and Brand Perception

For the logo mark, we decided to keep the wordmark simple. Smoolthan worked exceptionally well here because of its neutral yet distinctive character shapes. It doesn’t compete with the icon; instead, it supports it. When designing a brand identity, the typography often carries the bulk of the personality. Smoolthan conveys professionalism and trustworthiness, which is essential for a wellness brand.

I tested the font in various contexts to see how it influenced brand perception. On a dark background, the white version of Smoolthan looked sharp and high-contrast. On a cream-colored label, it felt soft and organic. This versatility is rare. Many premium fonts struggle when moved from digital screens to print materials, but Smoolthan held its own. Whether it was on a website header or a physical jar, the font maintained its integrity. This reliability is what separates a good commercial font from a great one.

Packaging and Product Labels

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the packaging design. Skincare products require a lot of text—ingredients, usage instructions, legal disclaimers—all while keeping the design visually appealing. This is where Smoolthan proved its worth as a supporting typeface.

We used the lighter weights for the fine print, and despite the small size, the text remained crisp. The x-height is generous, which enhances readability on curved surfaces like bottles. I also experimented with tracking (letter-spacing) to give the product names a bit of breathing room. Because Smoolthan is a sans serif font with such clean lines, adding slight tracking didn’t make the text look disjointed; instead, it added a touch of luxury and sophistication.

For the front of the packaging, we used the bold weight for the brand name. It stood out clearly against the minimalist background. This dual-use capability—working as both a strong display font for headlines and a reliable body font for details—is a huge advantage for designers who want to maintain a cohesive look across all design assets.

Digital Applications and Social Media Graphics

Of course, a modern brand needs to live online. I took the same typographic system into social media graphics for Instagram and Facebook. Smoolthan translated beautifully to digital screens. Its vector-based nature meant it scaled perfectly from a mobile phone screen to a desktop monitor without any pixelation or blurriness.

I created a set of templates for promotional posts. Using Smoolthan allowed us to create a consistent visual language across different platforms. The font’s modern aesthetic aligned perfectly with the clean, minimalist vibe we were going for. It paired nicely with simple geometric shapes and ample white space, reinforcing the brand’s message of purity and simplicity.

For website headers, the font provided a strong anchor. It drew the eye immediately to the main call-to-action. In web design, where attention spans are short, having a typeface that communicates the brand tone instantly is invaluable. Smoolthan does exactly that—it says "modern," "clean," and "reliable" before the user even reads the content.

Font Pairing and Style Combinations

While Smoolthan is strong enough to stand alone, I found that it pairs exceptionally well with other type styles depending on the desired mood. For this project, we kept it strictly sans serif to maintain the modern aesthetic. However, for future projects, I would recommend pairing it with a delicate script font for accents or quotes. The contrast between the structured, geometric lines of Smoolthan and the flowing curves of a handwritten font can create a beautiful dynamic.

You could also pair it with a classic serif font if you want to add a touch of tradition or authority to the brand. The key is to let Smoolthan remain the primary voice while using other fonts as complementary voices. This approach ensures that the brand identity remains unified but layered with interest.

Practical Advice for Testing Before Commitment

If you are considering Smoolthan for your next project, here is some practical advice based on my experience:

Final Thoughts on Usability

Using Smoolthan for this branding project was a smooth process. It didn’t fight me; it collaborated. As a creative font, it offers enough personality to be interesting without being distracting. As a functional tool, it delivers on readability and versatility.

For freelancers and agencies alike, finding a commercial font that strikes this balance is rare. Smoolthan feels like a workhorse that can also dress up for a party. Whether you are designing a logo for a tech startup, creating marketing materials for a local restaurant, or building a personal portfolio, Smoolthan provides a solid foundation. It respects the viewer’s time by being clear and direct, while still offering enough aesthetic appeal to keep them engaged. In a world of noisy visuals, sometimes the best choice is the one that speaks quietly and clearly—and that is exactly what Smoolthan does.
